Can Lawyers Work Remotely?

One of the first questions I am always asked when a personal injury client consults me is if they need to come to my office. My office is based in downtown Toronto and this often is a concern to people living outside of the GTA. The inconvenience of travelling to Toronto and paying for parking to meet a lawyer is not something that people like to do.

What most prospective clients do not know is that I represent and have represented people all over Ontario. I am able to do so from Toronto given the advent of virtual meetings and advanced communication tools. These tools allow me to conduct face-to-face meetings with a client.  All documentation can be signed online during the meeting. The greatest benefit of a virtual meeting is that there is no need for inconvenient travelling since you can participate in the meeting from the comfort of your own home. This ensures that the file is handled in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

Given the current pandemic, much can now be conducted via video conference when a matter is in litigation. For example, commissioning of documents, examinations for discovery, motions, pre-trials and even trials can now be performed remotely. Essentially, clients will not incur any more costs retaining my law firm than if the client retained a lawyer closer to home.
